Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who needs Smart DHA?
A.

Smart DHA is a great source of two types of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).  They can be taken by anyone, especially infants, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Q. Why Smart DHA is needed?
A.

Omega-3 fatty acids are EFAs (essential fatty acids) that are needed for the maintenance of optimal health.   They cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained from dietary sources.  Omega-3 fatty acids are good for the development of brain, heart and eyes.  They may be used to lower triglyceride levels and elevate HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, resulting in better heart health.  It is of great interest that omega-3 can enhance children’s learning and development as well as improve their skin complexion.  Ongoing research into the health benefits of omega-3 suggests that they may benefit and prevent a wide range of conditions including peroxisomal disorders (such as Zellweger’s syndrome), diabetic nephropathy, cystic fibrosis, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), dyslexia, cognitive impairment and dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease).

Q. What makes Smart DHA differ from other DHA products?
A.

Smart DHA contains both the EFAs (essential fatty acids) of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).  The usual EPA to DHA ratio in DHA products is approximately 1.5.  Under certain conditions, the ratios may increase to about 3.  However, what differentiates Smart DHA and other DHA products is that the DHA to EPA ratio of Smart DHA is 4.5:1, which greatly exceeds the ratios of all other DHA products that are currently in the market.

The omega-3 DHA-rich oil of Smart DHA is extracted from tuna orbital fat and is free of contaminants.  Smart DHA is produced in Japan using a special process that preserves the oil’s natural nutritional value.  The highest quality oil is ensured by a patented low-temperature and pressure manufacturing process.  This process also avoids the formation of unhealthy TFAs (trans-fatty acids) that may present in other DHA products in the market.  The oil in Smart DHA is almost transparent in colour, reflecting the purity of this product.  Independent laboratory testing shows that Smart DHA contains no pesticides, no cancer causing PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and heavy metals.

Q. Can children take Smart DHA?
A.

Smart DHA contains the best quality of fish oil that can be taken by children at an early age.  Researches have shown that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) consumption can enhance the development of our mental, cardiac and visual functions.  Ongoing studies have also indicated that the intake of omega-3 DHA-rich oil can reduce of the risk of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) development.

Q. Is Smart DHA vegetarian friendly?
A.

Smart DHA is a marine derived health product.  It is not suitable for vegetarians.

Q. Is Smart DHA all natural?
A.

Yes, Smart DHA does not contain any added chemicals, preservatives, binders, flavors, salts or sugars.

Q. Are there any contraindications?
A.

If uncertain, consult physician but should be safe for infants, pregnant women or nursing mothers.  No serious adverse events in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) supplementation have been reported.  Side effects that have been reported include mild gastrointestinal upsets such as nausea and diarrhea, eructation and “fishy” smelling breath.  There are no significant reports of nosebleeds and bruising.

Smart DHA is a natural product that is free of any contaminants.  The intake of Smart DHA does not increase the exposure of the mother and fetus to contaminants such as methylmercury, dioxins and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls).  The European Food Safety Authority has stated that women of childbearing age consuming two servings of fish per week should generally not exceed the tolerable weekly intake of environmental pollutants.

Q. Are there any interactions with drugs / medication?
A.

Please consult your healthcare professional if you are on any medication.  Omega-3 is contraindicated for hemophiliacs and those taking warfarin (coumadin), so its use should be with caution.  Fish oils are known to increase bleeding time and exhibit anti-coagulant properties, and omega-3 supplementation should be stopped before any surgery.  No interaction between omega-3 and drugs (e.g. aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)) or herbs (e.g. garlic, ginkgo) have been reported.  However, it should be noted that fish oil may enhance anti-platelet action of aspirin and other NSAID's (COX-1 type, ibuprofen, and others). Therefore, use of fish oil together with aspirin (especially daily low dose as used to prevent strokes and heart attacks) may be harmful.  If they were to interact, possible manifestation might be an increased susceptibility to bruising, nosebleeds, hemoptysis, hematemesis, hematuria and blood in the stool.

There is no evidence that omega-3 supplements have adverse effects on glucose tolerance, insulin secretion or insulin resistance in non-diabetic subjects.  Diabetics should monitor their use of omega-3 supplements and note if the supplements affect their glycemic control.  They should consult their physicians in event of any uncertainty.

Q. Are there any interactions with nutritional supplements?
A.

Those taking Smart DHA, they should avoid taking any chitosan-containing supplements (eg. Cho-Less-Trol) at the same time of day.  This so that the lipid-binding effect of chitosan would not affect the fish oil absorption.

Q. What are good sources of omega-3?
A.

If you do not like the taste of fish, then you may consider meeting your omega-3 fatty acids needs from other foods sources, such as nuts (e.g. walnuts, hazelnuts and brazil nuts), flaxseeds, omega-3 eggs, soybeans, some margarines, vegetable oils (e.g. canola, soybean and flaxseed), and some green vegetables (e.g. Brussels sprouts, silverbeet, spinach and salad greens).  It is recommended that a minimum of five servings of these foods should be included in your diet each week.
