Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who needs Bone Power?
A.

Bone Power consists of the best source of calcium from fossilized Okinawa Marine Coral with more than 73 trace minerals.  It is suitable for use by everyone, especially for those who are suffering from osteoporosis or having a low bone mass.  Bone loss in women is common and can begin at an early age.  Taking a good dietary calcium supplement at an early age will help to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis in later life.

Q. Why Bone Power is needed?
A.

Bone Power consists of calcium, one of the most abundant minerals in the human body.  Calcium combines with phosphate to form hydroxyapatite, which is essential for the growth and maintenance of our bones and teeth.  Calcium is also crucial for muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction and expansion, hormones and enzymes secretion, and communication within the nervous system.  A certain level of calcium must be maintained in the body fluid and tissues to ensure all the processes are working efficiently.

Q. What is Osteoporosis?
A.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that leads to an increased risk of fracture.  The aging population, particularly among the postmenopausal women is the ones who are more susceptible to the development of this disease.  Osteoporosis often results from dietary factors, such as chronically low calcium intake, low vitamin D intake, poor calcium absorption and excess calcium excretion.

Q. Can children take Bone Power?
A.

Bone Power is safe for child consumption.  Children should start taking Bone Power during childhood to build up a healthy bone density for future.

Q. Is Bone Power vegetarian friendly?
A.

Bone Power is encapsulated using a vegetarian capsule. There are no animal products utilized.

Q. Is your product environmental friendly and natural?
A.

The Okinawa Marine Coral Minerals of Bone Power are derived from an environmentally friendly and natural process.  In Japan, the Japanese government regulates the sale of coral minerals and limits the mining areas of dead corals.  To sustain the ecosystem, coral miners are forbidden to touch the living coral reefs, which are the nursery grounds and habitat of fishes, invertebrates and plants.  The coral minerals that we use in Bone Power are derived from the skeletons of dead corals from the reefs in the area of Okinawa.  Unlike some products that use living corals and cause detriment to the environment, we guarantee that Bone Power is a natural and environmental friendly product that you can trust.

Q. Are there any contraindications?
A.

Calcium supplementation is contraindicated in those with hypercalcemia.  Hypercalcemia from diet and supplements is very rare.  Most incidents of hypercalcemia result from sarcoidosis, hyperparathyroidism, hypervitaminosis D and cancer.   Calcium supplementation is also contraindicated in individuals who are hypersensitive to calcium-containing supplements.  Calcium supplements are generally well tolerated.  Calcium carbonate should be used with caution since gastrointestinal side effects, such as constipation, bloating, gas and flatulence may occur.

Q. Are there any interactions with drugs / medication?
A.

Calcium is known to decrease absorption of bisphosphonate, levothyroxine, quinolone, and tetracycline.  Concomitant use of H2 blockers and calcium can cause decreased absorption of calcium salt.  Levothyroxine or tetracyclines may adsorb to calcium forming a non-absorbable complex, thus blocking its absorption.  Similarly, the use of proton pump inhibitors and calcium has been shown to decrease the absorption of calcium.

Q. Are there any interactions with nutritional supplements?
A.

Insitol hexaphosphate (phytic acid) or sodium alginate intake may decrease the absorption of calcium.  Concomitant use of iron and calcium may inhibit iron absorption.  The use of fluoride, magnesium phosphorous or zinc with calcium may affect the absorption of these minerals.  It is known that vitamin D intake may increase the absorption of calcium.  Similarly, the use of non-digestible oligosaccharides and calcium may increase calcium absorption in the colon.

Q. What is a good source of calcium?
A.

Calcium can be obtained through the consumption of dairy products, such as milk and cheese.  Individuals who are lactose intolerant and others who have ethical or health reasons are unable to include these dietary sources of calcium.  Fortunately, many good sources of calcium exist, such as the collard greens, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, broccoli, bok choy, tofu and sardines with bones.

Q. What are the different forms of calcium supplements in the market?
A.

Several forms of calcium salts are available as supplements. These are calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium phosphate, calcium lactate and calcium gluconate.  Calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate contain approximately 40% elemental calcium. The equivalent for other forms are calcium citrate (21%), calcium lactate (13%) and calcium gluconate (9%).  Elemental calcium refers to the amount of calcium in a supplement that is available for the body to absorb.  Currently, most of the calcium supplements on the market are in the form of calcium carbonate although sources vary greatly and in most cases do no include trace minerals.
