| Q. |
Why Immune Support is needed? |
 |
| A. |
Immune Support is taken for immune enhancement as well as for those with stressful lifestyles, unbalanced diets and lack of rest. Its active ingredients are usually viewed as health foods that function as preventive medicines.
Lentinus edodes (shiitake) mycelia extract has anti-fungal, anti-tumor, and anti-viral effects. The most significant shiitake product available today is LEM (Lentinus edodes mycelia), an extract produced from mycelia that shows high oral activity. Shiitake mycelia also produce a lignin compound, EP3, that exhibits both anti-viral and immuno-active properties.
Cordyceps contains polysaccharides and sterols. It is a tonic good for general debility, anaemia, and lung disease. It is also present in most Chinese male virility herbal formulas. Research on mycelial extracts of cordyceps has yielded a polysaccharide with high oral activity against tumors. It is reported to possess direct anti-tumor effects as well as immunological enhancement and is strongly anti-fungal.
Lingzhi (reishi) is the most studied of the medicinal mushrooms. It is unique for its active anti-tumor polysaccharides as well as its high content of organic germanium. It has been suggested that organic germanium increases resistance to stress, thus acting as an adaptogen. Research with lingzhi’s triterpenes (ganoderic acids) indicates that they may play a role in lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, and improving liver function. Other possible traditional benefits of lingzhi that have been confirmed by modern scientific research are: calming of central nervous system over-excitation, relief from insomnia, inhibition of allergic reactions, and relief from chronic bronchitis.
Turmeric extract (cucuminoids) is known for its powerful antioxidant effect. It is used as an active ingredient in Immune Support for giving your immunity a further boost.

| Q. |
What are mycelia? |
 |
| A. |
Most mushrooms are composed of a cap and a stem. What is not normally visible is the actual fungus organism, or mycelium. The mycelia spread throughout a nutrient base or substrate, amassing nutrients. When environmental conditions are right, the mycelia use these nutrients to promote the growth of the mushrooms.
A key factor of the nutritional value of mushrooms is the actual bio-availability of the nutrients. Some proteins and carbohydrates are bound up in the mushroom cell wall. Mushroom cell walls are so tightly linked together that they resist our digestive enzymes. As a result, a significant portion of the carbohydrates in mushrooms cannot be utilized as nutrients and can function only as fiber. Immune Support uses mycelial extracts that have been specially processed to ensure the bio-availability of the essential nutrients.

|
| Q. |
Are there any interactions with drugs / medication? |
 |
| A. |
Please consult your healthcare professional if you are on any medication. The constituent cordyceps may have additive hypoglycemic effect. Diabetics should monitor their blood glucose when using cordyceps. Cordyceps should not be used by those with myelogenous type cancers because cordyceps has been shown to increase the proliferation of red blood cell precursor cells, which arise from the same lineage as the cells that cause myelogenous cancers. The constituent lingzhi usually does not cause any major herb-drug interaction problems. Lingzhi may increase the risk of bleeding, thus limiting the effectiveness of the anticoagulants and antiplatelets. It should be noted that lingzhi should not be taken with warfarin or other blood thinners. Lingzhi may have additive hypotensive effects on medications for high blood pressure. It may affect the effectiveness of immunosuppressants by enhancing the immune response. Lingzhi also increases plasma antioxidant capacity, which can greatly affect the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents.
